How to work in Germany: first steps

  1. Free movement

Free movement of workers is a fundamental principle of the Treaty enshrined in Article 45. But if you plan to stay longer than three months or take up residence you need to register at the Residents' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt).
 

  1. Tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer)

The Steueridentifikationsnummer is the Tax ID number without which you will not be able to work in Germany.
 

  1. Social insurance and health coverage

You need to go to the tax office (Finanzamt) with your Steueridentifikationsnummer and the certificate of residence to receive the social security card.
